Arsène Wenger will take stock of Arsenal's position in December

Arsène Wenger believes December will be the defining month for Arsenal to get back into the title race. Following a terrible start to the season, which included the 8-2 humiliation at Manchester United, Arsenal have won four of their past five league games, last Saturday's 5-3 defeat of Chelsea suggesting they may have the quality to mount a challenge.

With United losing 6-1 to Manchester City two weeks ago, there is a sense that the Premier League may be open this season despite Roberto Mancini's side leading their cross-town rivals by five points.

Asked if Arsenal could yet force themselves back into contention, Wenger downplayed the suggestion, saying: "It is too early to say that. If we win a few more games, why not? We are only three points behind Chelsea, but we need a strong period and Man City need a weaker period, which they are not having at the moment. At the moment, we are not near enough to say we are playing for the championship but we want to come back. We are back already in a position where we can aspire to be in the top four. We were not three weeks ago.

"Mathematically you are not out of it but you have to be closer to speak about it. We are 12 points behind Man City and that is too much. So for us, let's be humble and progressive. What is for sure is that in December, if we are in a very strong position, then we have a good chance. In December we will have played Man City away, Tottenham away, Chelsea away, Man United away, and they all come to the Emirates after Christmas. For us to be in a strong position at that stage would be very important."

Arsenal have won three championships under Wenger and the Frenchman can point to history to inspire his team – he claimed his first title having faced the same margin as now in the 1997-98 season. At the close of that December Arsenal were in sixth, 12 points behind United, before edging the title by a point. At the same juncture in 2001-02 Arsenal were second, a point behind United, and ended the season seven clear. In the 2003-04 Invincibles season the side were again a point behind Sir Alex Ferguson's team, and claimed the league by 11 points.

Regarding City's prospects of being champions for the first time since 1968 Wenger said: "I don't really know. They had some impressive away results and especially at Tottenham and Man United but we have to see. If they are still there with that difference in December, then you can say it will be difficult to catch them."

Wenger confirmed that Robin van Persie will start against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday after the striker, who has scored 12 times, did not start in the midweek 0-0 draw with Marseille in the Champions League.

Santos, the Brazilian left-back, drew criticism for some cavalier defending in that game. But Wenger said the best teams have full-backs who can attack. "I feel it's an important part of winning – having a full-back who creates," he said. "Take the Brazilian national team, the teams who have won, you will see that there is always two good full-backs. With two average full-backs they would not have won. They had Carlos Alberto [at the 1970 World Cup] and Roberto Carlos, Cafu [in 2002]."

Wenger said Manuel Almunia, the goalkeeper, may not be offered a new contract. "At the moment we have plenty of keepers so that depends a little bit on who will stay and who will go," he said. Arsenal have no fresh injuries.
